Overwatch 2 Revives Loot Boxes with Improved Drop Rates and Rewards

New seasonal update brings back loot boxes with transparent mechanics

Overwatch 2 is making a bold move by reintroducing loot boxes in Season 15, marking the return of a controversial yet nostalgic feature for long-time players. This change comes alongside a variety of exciting new content, including hero perks and an innovative third-person game mode.

According to an official press release, "Season 15 also features the return of loot boxes. You will be able to earn a variety of cosmetics when collecting loot boxes. They will be available from weekly and event rewards." Players will also receive one loot box through the free battle pass and two additional loot boxes by purchasing the Premium battle pass.

Loot Boxes Make a Comeback with Predictable Rewards

When Overwatch 2 launched as a free-to-play title, Blizzard eliminated loot boxes in favor of an in-game shop and battle pass system. The decision was largely influenced by growing concerns over loot boxes resembling gambling mechanics and increased regulatory scrutiny from government agencies. However, with the return of loot boxes in Season 15, Blizzard has taken steps to ensure greater transparency in how rewards are distributed.

Unlike the original Overwatch loot boxes, which had a reputation for unpredictable payouts, the new system guarantees a structured reward system. Players will receive at least one Rare or better item in every loot box, an Epic item within every five consecutive boxes, and a Legendary item within every twenty boxes. This structured system makes it easier for players to track their progress and increases the likelihood of obtaining valuable cosmetics without the frustration of endlessly grinding or spending money.

The drop rates for standard loot boxes are as follows:

  • 5.10% chance to receive a Legendary item
  • 21.93% chance to receive an Epic item
  • 96.26% chance to receive a Rare item
  • 97.97% chance to receive a Common item

Meanwhile, Legendary loot boxes guarantee at least one Legendary item, with the same probabilities for Epic, Rare, and Common items.

A More Player-Friendly Approach to Earning Skins

For players who fondly remember the loot box system from the original Overwatch, this revival may feel like a welcome change. While loot boxes were often criticized for their randomness, they also allowed players to earn cosmetic items for free simply by playing the game and leveling up. In contrast, Overwatch 2's shop and battle pass system have made unlocking skins significantly more expensive, requiring direct purchases rather than in-game progression.

Many long-time fans have expressed frustration over the monetization model in Overwatch 2, which offers limited free rewards while pushing players toward premium content. The return of loot boxes provides an alternative way for players to acquire cosmetics without directly spending money, making the game feel more rewarding for those who prefer to play rather than pay.

While loot boxes remain a divisive topic in the gaming community, Overwatch 2's refined approach—with predictable drop rates and guaranteed rewards—offers a more balanced system that could benefit both free-to-play and paying players. With the launch of Season 15 on February 18, players will soon have the chance to experience this nostalgic feature once again.
